Principles and Philosophy

Coach Shrewsberry teaches his team to force opponents to take the shots they don’t want to take; his team makes it their goal to force teams into shooting contested mid range jumpers - some of the toughest shots to make.  Combined with getting stops, building accountability through communicating, and shrinking the floor, Shrewsberry has turned around his team's defense!

Drills

Using a series of build up drills, Coach Shrewsberry guides you through their defensive progression.  You will find 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 drills you can use to teach players how to contain ball handlers and get stops.  In 3 man closeout players learn the proper way to closeout to any type of player and learn how to quickly jump to the ball.  In 1v1 ‘Guard Your Yard’, players will focus on keeping the ball handler out of the middle of the floor and force to the deep corner of the floor.  In ‘4v4 Shell’, players will learn to communicate and focus on stopping the ball rather than worry about staying with their man.  This helps build a wall around the paint and limits opponents’ easy scores and helps avoid your players getting into foul trouble.

Pick and Roll Coverage

With ball screens being a huge part of today’s game, you have to have a coverage that works for you.  Shrewsberry uses the Ice Coverage - containing the basketball and forcing to the sideline.  Coach Shrewsberry uses 2v2 and 4v4 breakdown drills to teach you how to use Ice Coverage and make it fit your style of play defensively.  You will learn how to coach your players to shift their feet and stay on top of the ball as they ride the ball handler out of the middle of the floor, limiting their scoring opportunities.

In this video, Coach Shrewsberry will show you all the build up drills they use to enforce their principles of making you shoot mid range jumpers and staying out of the middle of the floor.  This is a video you will love to add to your defensive collection!
