In 2019, Keller coached the SFA Lumberjacks to one of college basketball's biggest upsets of all time (#1 ranked Duke - home - at Cameron Indoor Stadium)If you are looking for an effective ball-screen offense, but you haven’t felt like you’ve had the athletes to execute it properly, then this is the video for you!
Stephen F. Austin State’s Kyle Keller is thought of as one of the brightest coaching minds in the collegiate game today. He has devised an innovative offensive system that gets his athletes good scoring opportunities – even if they are not the best shooters or scorers in the gym on any given night. In this video, you will get position-by-position and skill breakdowns for Coach Keller’s Ball Screen Offense, getting an inside look at the offense’s continuity, all the reads and actions that stem from it, the adjustments you can make to attack zone defenses and a series of tough-to-defend baseline out-of-bounds plays.
This Ball Screen Offense is a system that will help you be successful with the talent you have available, while providing a way for your players to get better and gain confidence as the season progresses and the longer you run it.
Screening Offense
To begin the video, Coach Keller talks about the circumstances behind the switch to this type of an offense with his own program. At some point and time, all coaches have had to make mid-season changes at some point in their coaching career – whether it be due to injuries or unforeseen circumstances. Coach Keller details his experience from a season where he had multiple injuries to key players and was forced to make a change offensively. He explains WHY this screening motion offense allowed non-scorers and non-shooters to still get opportunities to score and win games.
Taking you through all the pitfalls he faced when making a big offensive switch, Keller explains all the beneficial actions, reads and scoring opportunities that come from running a continuous ball screen offense.
Keller provides a detailed description of each position in his Ball Screen Offense and the roles and responsibility within the motion and also talks about how to take advantage of a non-shooter who needs to make an impact on offense. His ‘ten toes to the rim’ concept helps players visualize body position when driving and the importance of attacking the paint.
Coach Keller describes how his Ball Screen Offense is predicated on quick passes and ball movements that lead to multiple on-the-ball screens. The offense empowers your forwards as they touch the ball on every other pass.
Attacking, Adjustments & an Out-of-Bounds PlayDifferent coverages are discussed and Keller explains how to attack the vulnerabilities inherent in each defense. Different adjustments include: attacking switches, hard hedges and traps, and ice coverages.
To continue the presentation, Coach Keller shows several adjustments you can make with the offense to keep the defense guessing and to take advantage of mismatches. He details tactics you can use to get an entry that creates movement and positions the forward run toward a ball screen.
As most teams at lower levels switch on ball screens, Keller shows how to exploit switching and how you can find mismatches through the naturally occurring continuity of the offense.
In addition, Keller also showcases how to run this against a 2-3 zone defense, as well as a baseline out of bounds play that flows right into the offense.
If you are needing an offense that works with those seasons where you possess lesser talent or even want to reinvigorate your current Ball-Screen Motion Offense, this video gives you the power to do so. Coach Keller does an amazing job of detailing every read and adjustment – including explanations and scenarios to get you ready for the upcoming season!
