Kent State’s Rob Senderoff has a well-earned reputation for building fundamentally sound players throughout his collegiate coaching career.
From building up a player’s confidence on offense, to finishing around the rim, to keeping players engaged during practice, Senderoff’s teams have built what it takes to take on some of the top teams in the country.
In this highly valuable instructional video, you will learn all the offensive drills that Coach Senderoff uses regularly within his program to build up and develop dynamic offensive players.
Warm-Up Drills, Half-Court Cutting and Spacing
Players must loosen up to begin practice, so why not start them out on the move, engaged in their learning and development and teach them how to communicate at a high level? Coach Senderoff jumps right into his favorite warm-up drills to get his players moving and keep them engaged.
Every drill that Coach Senderoff showcases features a goal, a time to reach that goal and another way to build onto that goal. In his ‘100-in-2-Minutes Drill,’ players work on their full-court warmup by sprinting the length of the floor, while making three passes to get from one end of the court to the other. Players have a goal of scoring 100 points within their allotted 2 minutes of shooting.
In his ‘Z-Passing Drill,’ Senderoff shows players working on getting open and cutting toward the basketball to receive a pass, while looking to pass ahead or attack the rim. This is an excellent drill to help build pivoting, different types of passing, and pushing pace with the dribble.
Coach Senderoff then showcases his ‘Continuous Extra Pass Drills,’ which features players working on getting to the rim and finishing off two feet, all while making the extra pass so another teammate can get a better shot or finish. This excellent drill reinforces fundamental aspects within such as shot fakes, paint touches, and baseline drives.
Coaches who can put offensive fundamentals together within their half-court offense are often ahead of the game when it comes to executing their offense. In the ‘Offensive-Rebounding Drill,’ players work on securing the basketball as it comes off the backboard, with two hands and looking for their outlet pass on the same side. After hitting the outlet player, the rebounder moves the ball around the perimeter incorporating a different action within your offense, but by adding in one more pass, other players can crash the glass and work for the offensive rebound.
Building on the cutting and spacing of the previous drill, Senderoff demonstrates two additional drills to work on a variety of different cuts, the ‘Warrior-Cut Drill’ and the ‘Rocket-Cut Drill.’ Both cuts are performed off post entries and feature getting a pass out of the post and attacking the rim.
Finishing, Finishes
In today’s game finishing is everything on offense. Finishing off both feet is what great players and great offensive teams do. Coach Senderoff explains that his program places a high level of emphasis and focus on two-foot finishes. In his ‘2-Minute Finishes Drill,’ players are set against a clock and are instructed to get past a defender pad to get to the rim and use a two-foot finish in the paint. This is an excellent drill to set goals and work on your communication as a team.
In his ‘Beilein Finishes Drill,’ Coach Senderoff’s players work on getting into the paint, executing a jump-stop off two feet, receiving a pass and finishing off two feet. This is an excellent drill to add different finishes off two feet, utilize different ways to get into the paint and work on building up a player’s confidence and strength around the rim.
Coach Senderoff-coached teams have seen great success; the foundation of their consistent results is built on solid fundamentals. This must-have instructional video for improving your team’s foundational skills – such as finishing, catching, passing and communication – make these drills an excellent addition to your coaching repertoire.
