Shooting is arguably the No. 1 trait that can have an immediate impact on dramatically improving a team's offense. In this instructional coaching video that uses on-the-court player demonstrations, Coach John Beilein shares his secret teaching plan to improve shooting.
Coach Beilein demonstrates how to develop effective shooters from breaking down how they catch the ball, to a teaching-focus on their shooting technique, to proven methods that improve the release of the basketball on shot attempts.
Beilein also focuses on critical components that improve perimeter shooting percentages, such as spin-and-rotation of the ball and the proper footwork that players need to utilize during catch-and-shoot situations.
Sharing a variety of practice-tested shooting drills, Coach Beilein unveils the most-valuable shooting drills he's seen and used to help develop and improve shooters in practice and during their skills workouts - with each drill containing quantifiable goals that players must meet to be considered team 'shooters.'
Shooting Technique
Coach Beilein focuses on what he describes as 'reading the map' technique when first catching the basketball. He describes how he wants players to move and use their hands upon catching the ball, in an effort to find the ball's seams and easily locate the center of the ball - which are all essential actions that allow players to relax their wrist and create spin to promote proper shooting rotation with the ball.
With a valuable description about how shooters need to get to the 'Seventh Floor' (out of 10 floors) to release the ball effectively on shots, Coach Beilein highlights shooting technique essentials such as elbow angle (where ideally the elbow is tucked in), and how elbow angle can be corrected with changing the angle of their feet during jump shots.
These are all valuable methods to collectively, or individually, help the players on your team to improve their shot making abilities.
Footwork and How It Impacts Shooting
Coach Beilein stresses the importance of catching the ball with two hands and landing with balance on two feet every time. Whether you are getting to shoot or not, according to Coach Beilein, the fundamentals of catching the basketball are the most important elements required for successful shooting.
Coach Beilein examines three different approaches to successfully catching the basketball. Beilein has studied each of these three approaches deeply (called, the 2-1 Approach, 1-2 Approach and Pogo Approach) at the NBA level to determine their effectiveness and their efficiency.
This portion of the video helps coaches with their players' footwork and determines what works best for their own team and/or how each footwork approach best fits with the offense that their team runs.
