Jay Wright's ability to transform his players' skills through individual workouts is legendary. Few are better at molding a player to his system with solid teaching, hard work, and repetition. Associate Head Coach Brett Gunning guides players through a classic Wildcat workout. This video will demonstrate the value of repetition when teaching in a small group setting. Wright stresses the "one workout fits all" philosophy as guards and forwards execute the identical workouts. This year-round workout is a foundation of the Wildcat program. Their spread floor attack from all five spots on the floor makes success virtually impossible for opponents. Players get maximum reps during this intense 40-minute skill development session. This workout begins with set lifts, an excellent shooting technique used every day in Wright's program. A quick, aggressive ballhandling segment follows that includes ball slaps, two ball drills, and full-court work emphasizing change of speed and direction. Not a moment is wasted as players shoot game-like free throws between drills. Passing is demonstrated with the versatile three man weave run tight, three-point line, and sideline in the full-court. A footwork segment illustrates the Jab Series: Jab & Go, Jab & Rip, Jab & Jump Shot. After free throws, the workout turns to shooting work. Olympic shooting involves two ball and three players with the emphasis on good habits such as passing, pivoting, and rebounding. The intense workout concludes with competitive 1-on-1 and 2-on 2-drills. The 1-on-1 drill matches the offensive players Jab Series skill against the defensive players ability to keep his head and hand on the ball, make quick slides, contest the shot, and tag the shooter. This drill culminates the skill session by combining all offensive and defensive teaching points into one drill. Hard play, competition, communication, skills, concentration, and good habits are a part of every work out. A superior example of how players can be made in the in-season and off-season!

Jay Wright is a big believer in developing an attitude for his teams. His practices, especially the early-season, tone-setting practices, are a great example of this attitude and how he has instilled it into his Wildcat teams. In this video, Coach Wright will take you through an entire practice early in the season. Like all top-notch coaches, his practice is organized, energized, positive and enthusiastic. To emphasize the importance of shooting, all players work on a set-lift shooting technique prior to practice. After a quick 5-10 minute huddle at mid-court, a 30 minute segment includes 7 minutes of stretching, 4 minutes of passing, 9 minutes of shooting, 4 minutes of footwork, and 4 minutes of ball handling. This half-hour shows Wright's commitment to solid technique and fundamentals, which are part of every practice. Next are a series of small group drills with offensive and defensive emphasis. Drills include post feeds, lay-up drill, one two-step jumpers, jab series, and the lefty drill. Players are pushed and hard work is expected from the ever-positive Wildcat staff. Wright stresses communication between players and staff, which allows a strong bond to be built. Wright preaches good habits and a positive approach as he motivates his teams to elite status year in and year out. This practice showcases Villanova's philosophy with fundamentals, individual and team drills, and full-court play. Wright shows his coaching style by constantly praising and teaching his players during practice. An intense scrimmage puts it all together as practice concludes with "Win the Game", a team building free throw drill. Jay Wright's practice session combines all the ingredients needed for building a championship team every year!

Aggressive, no-nonsense defense is a trademark of Jay Wright's teams. On this video you will see how Villanova's man-to-man defense is built from the ground up with on-court demonstrations and key drills. Because of the great talent Villanova faces every game, Wright focuses on drills that will help contain quick, skilled ball handlers. This excellent teaching tool progresses from individual defensive stance, to one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-three in the half- and full-court. Wright stresses pressure on the ball, stance and vision away from the ball. To counter the 3-point shot, the 2-on-2 Whack Out drill will show how to close out on shooters and still contain the ball handler. The term "line of the ball and level of the ball" are illustrated in the Wildcat's 2-on-2 full-court drill. The versatile 2-on-2 in the Post drill focuses on perimeter defense as well as defending the post. Helping on the post is a concept introduced once the offensive post has the ball inside. The cornerstones of the video are defending on the ball, jumping to the ball, playing cutters, playing off the ball and reading help. This has great application to high school and junior high basketball. The concepts drilled are fundamentally solid and time-tested ingredients that contribute to Villanova's defense prowess!

Jay Wright's unique ability to teach proper fundamentals and footwork was key to the sustained, consistent success of his Villanova program. All of his players, regardless of their position, used the skills they learned in Jay Wright's practices to gain an edge over powerful opponents year after year. Wright defines four major scoring areas on the floor: wing, prime time (block), mid-post (off block), and slot (high post) positions. Because his players come from different backgrounds and systems, his ability to instill solid footwork into all his players is impressive. His motto is that "Players must be comfortable on either foot" so his workouts focus on pivoting on both the inside and the outside foot from both sides of the floor and why both are important. Wright demonstrates his Jab Series which creates potent scoring options from anywhere on the floor. Taught with or without the use of a screen, this series forms the bedrock for perimeter effectiveness at Villanova. A complement to the Jab Series is the Swing Series that incorporates the reverse pivot, bully move and two-footed hop jumpers. Jay Wright's instruction will greatly enhance your team's ability to attack on offense and score more points!

Villanova University basketball reached consistent, elite level success under Coach Jay Wright. His attention to detail and repetition allowed his teams to compete with the nation's best programs. A strong believer in footwork and balance, Wright consistently incorporates these into every shooting drill as he guides you through the entire shooting progression with this on-court presentation. This video is packed with 28 valuable drills that show why Villanova was a dangerous offensive club every year he was the coach. Using warm-up and technique drills, game drills, and free throw drills, he teaches and describes fundamentals and teaching points. Practice begins with set lifts to reinforce proper technique. "Keeping the elbow under the ball" is emphasized in the Bradley drill. The Mikan and reverse Mikan drills develops touch around the basket. A staple in the Villanova system is seen in the one- and two-step shooting sequence, which relies on proper footwork. V-cuts, rebounding, and shooting are combined in three man, two ball shooting drills. In all of the drills, a big emphasis is put on good, crisp passing. Wright believes in game-like, competitive shooting as he progresses through practice. Because confidence is the key to free throw shooting, the Wildcats work on free throw consistency throughout this video. Ultimately, game situations challenge players to build their confidence from the free throw line. During competitive drills, Wright preaches to his players to "set up quick, shoot slow". The two ball drill segment combines the screener and cutter as they build parts of motion offense into shooting drills. Four cutting options are presented after screens: Curl cut, back cut, out cut, and the straight cut. These drills increase the ability for each player to shoot from all spots on the floor, making the team balanced and difficult to defend. A GREAT video for solid footwork and competitive shooting drills!
