To win games you must put the ball in the basket! However, with all the things that need to be worked on in any given practice, sometimes shooting does not get as much time as it should. Clemson University Head Coach Brad Brownell knows and understands that challenge which led him to reevaluate when and how they intentionally practice shooting.

In this video you will get tons of shooting drills, fresh games and competitions that will keep your players engaged as they work on perhaps the most important fundamental - shooting!

"Do it as often as you can!"

Coach Brownell discusses what led him to reevaluate his practice designs to add more shooting. He talks about the importance of consistency with drills, keeping track of made shots, and focusing on fundamentals.

Brownell also gives a run down on their practice organization and time allotments for drills which will give you many new things to consider for your next practice.

Shooting Drills

The rest of the presentation is chalk full of drills working on all types and kinds of shots. Coach Brownell explains how they have several drills that they use that incorporate shooting for warmups; for example, the Michigan Drill gets each individual player over 30 shots in quick succession.

Drills included are:

  • Michigan Shooting
  • Kobe Drill
  • Boston Celtic Drill
  • Star 15
  • Doorman 30
  • Six Makes Drill
  • Free Throw Game
  • Cone Drill
  • 63 Drill
  • Team Drill
  • Free Throws & Jumpers drill
  • Shots out of their offense
  • 100 Point Game

These drills will get your players moving, conditioning, shots from everywhere on the floor, and game shots they will take within their offense. These drills will provide everything you might need to work on including stationary, moving, and game specific shots.

All of the drills shown are competitive and can be used throughout practice and throughout the week. Coach Brownell also gives an example of what drills they might use in any given practice which will help you think about how you can incorporate them into what you already do!

To close it out, the 100 Point Game is a great game that emphasizes shooting, playing fast, rebounding, and taking care of the ball. It is also timed with a shot clock which adds urgency and competition, your players will fall in love with this drill!

We can all do a better job incorporating more shooting drills into our practices, but sometimes it can be hard to know when and how. This video will give you the template of how to plan for more shots in your practices and enough drills to last the whole season!
