Coaching Advice and Tips

Coach Depelteau opens the video with a discussion of what he feels will make you a successful coach over the long term. He talks about the value of being humble as a coach and the benefits of building a staff that is balanced and adds to the total vision of your program.

Depelteau also reviews the benefits of this offense and shares 3 keys to running effective drills.

Breakdown Drills

The drills start 1v0 and build up to 4v4. Coach Depelteau uses a variety of line screening drills to work on timing, technique, communication, and angles.

Other aspects covered in the drills are:

  • The speed at which screens are not only set but the speed at which they are used.

  • How to set up the defender, second screens, passing, and how to add different actions that would be used in a game.

“Talls and Smalls” is a great up-tempo transition drill that reinforces screening and shooting in transition while involving all players.

The 2v2 Offensive Shell Drill works on catching and dealing with various defensive coverages.

The 3v3 Offensive Shell Drill works on reading the help defense.

The 4v4 Offensive Shell Drill covers the movement of the players when the ball handler gets near the basket.

20 Ball Screen Offense

Coach Depelteau starts with the basic actions and movements. Here you will learn that every cut is a scoring cut. Depelteau then moves onto the things that will blow the offense up such as catching the ball in the wrong position and dribbling right away once the player catches the ball on the wing.

After showing the options when the ball handler uses the screen, Depelteau covers what happens when the screen is rejected, how the weak sides use pins and, where the post ducks in when the screen is rejected.

For any team that uses ball screens there is a strong chance the defense will hard hedge, down the screen, and/or switch at some point  - Depelteau shows how easy it is with this offense to defeat those defensive actions.

Finally, Depelteau  finishes by showing how a team can use Low Stacks and Floppy action to flow into the offense.

This is a fantastic offense for any coach to use that is easy to implement and even better to expand. Everything is provided in this video - Depelteau’s experiences and first-hard experience with this offense, the clear breakdown drills, the offense itself, the counters, and excellent variations.
