This video gives you a great look at how a team can play to their strengths and compete against any team in the nation. With a 58% winning percentage for his career, Coach Boyle has guided the Buffaloes to nine 20+ winning seasons. All of this has been done through teaching offensive actions within the 5 Out system and preparing players to compete every night.

In 2 pre-season practices, Coach Boyle showcases how they use their ‘offensive and defensive emphasis of the day’ to build their players' confidence and how their players compete in every drill.

Beginning with warm up shots, players are learning actions they will use in their 5 Out offense to create quality shots. From elbow attacks to a kick out 3, players are getting many reps and shots up at game speed.

Practice Session 1

3v0 Attacks

Using 3v0 situations, Coach Boyle and his staff breakdown the different ways that players can use 5 Out to create scoring opportunities. Using Dribble ats, pitch backs, and sandwich sets, players are learning to incorporate ball screens, handoffs, and 1 more passing for high quality shots. These actions are a part of the bigger scheme that will help teach players how to play and read what the defense is giving them rather than focus on remembering sets.

Out of Bounds Series

Learn 5 different box sets that all have similar actions and are sure to keep your opponents on their toes. These sets include getting your best post player a slip to the basket, your best shooter coming off of a triple set, and a flex screen action for an easy layup. If nothing is available players will learn how to get into 5 Out offense right away and continue to attack the paint.

Press Offense/Defense

Playing against a team that puts pressure on your offense 94 feet from the basket can wear a team down. Learning to play against a press can lead to a better defensive team and better prepare your offense to grind out a game and not be fatigued. In this segment, Boyle’s team is learning how to attack the press through ball reversals and cutting actions that will attack a press down the middle of the floor. Helping to build this up is Continuous Fastbreak that puts an emphasis on getting stops once you build up to 5v4 and 5v5.

5v5 Play

Rounding out the practice session is 5v5 play; putting together everything that was taught into game-like situations. Coach Boyle emphasizes letting the ball play to create more scoring opportunities and continue to shift the defense. This helps open the floor up for different cutting, spacing, and driving lanes for players to attack.

Practice Session 2

3v0 and 4v0 Actions

Continuing to build on the previous practices actions, Coach Boyle and his staff emphasize slips to get open looks. Using Ball screens to create open scoring opportunities and teaching players how to ghost a screen and get a slip to the basket. Using the Get Action players learn to slip off of the away screen and circle up to get an open baseline drive. In a 4v0 setting, players are building off of a ball screen reversal action and looking to beat a switching defense. This style of play opens the offense for slipping to the basket.

Transition

In 5v0 transition, players are learning to incorporate Zoom action, get action, and drag screens to throw a post entry. Coach Boyle and his staff breakdown this segment into simple actions that players can use to attack the middle of the floor.

Coach Boyle and his staff demonstrate how to slow the game down and teach these actions so players feel confident and comfortable playing in the open floor.

4v5 Drill

In 4v5 disadvantage basketball, the defense must fly around the floor to contest shots and get deflections. This is an excellent drill to teach communication and rotations as players work to prevent an easy shot.

Out of a stop, teams transition into 5v5 and work on their half court offense and half court defense. This is a great way to get your teams talking and on the same page as you build a full court game.

Shell Drill

Rounding out practice session 2 is a 4v4 shell drill where Coach Boyle and his staff will show how to defend cross screen - down screen action by jumping into gaps. This allows players to open up and get through screening action instead of creating a double screen with the defense. Players have to focus on not making mental mistakes as this is the difference between a bucket and stop.

In this Open Practice with Coach Boyle, you gain an idea of the amazing culture that they have created when you watch them competing in every drill. By using competition as a means to motivate, players are well equipped to play against any team on the schedule.

You will also see how players feel confident and prepared through the break down drills Coach Boyle and his staff utilize to teach offensive actions. This is a very informative and teaching video that will help you break down the different actions within your program and help you elevate yours to the next level!

Customer Review: 5 Out of 5 Stars!- “This is one of the best open practice teaching videos I have seen. Coach Boyle and his staff show why they have been so successful over the last 10 seasons through their teaching style. Lots of great drills and actions to pick up!”
