Features and Benefits:

  • Teaching the footwork fundamentals of playing in transition helps players make quick 0.5 second decisions
  • Teaching the footwork fundamentals of playing in the open court allows players to think on the fly
  • Learn how to give everyone reps at every position so that bigs will have guard skills and guards will have big skills

There are about 100 possessions per game and in about 35 of them you will be able to run in the open court. Open court offense is very fun and gives the players the opportunity to get easy looks from 3 which creates space for guards who can drive.

As one of the top scoring teams in the country, DePaul has averaged 80 plus points in 4 of the last 6 seasons and consistently top 20 in assists every year. This is done by putting emphasis on scoring every transition possession in the open court by getting the ball over the top of the defense.

In this video Coach Bruno demonstrated his Quick Up series to master the fundamentals of passing, cutting and scoring while also conditioning his players for the pace he wants to play

Defining Transitions, Running and Positionless Basketball

Transitions in basketball means way more than just ‘scoring after a make’. Transition is everything that happens during the game, from the change between guarding the ball and off ball and then switching from guarding the ball to defensive rebounding.

Everyone wants to run and play a running game, but they don't realize how hard that is until they’re asked to run. Coach Bruno wants his teams to play positionless basketball but with that, you must define positions to define roles, because everyone needs to know what the right spots are to run to and why you must do this. Coach outlines his positions in his positionless basketball offense which gives players clarity on where to be on offense.

Going over the top is the priority so defining the leaker, and rebounding, then outlet passing the miss, are the most crucial parts of this process.

This video demonstrates fundamental drills that are important to teach players what running means so that they can get the ball over top or come back to the ball if great defense is being played. The spacing is so important in this brand of basketball so wings must run within 5 feet of the sideline and be able to shoot the 3, because space is only created with the threat of making the shot. Once you have conditioned your players well enough to make 3-point shots in the open court, then driving becomes a whole lot easier!

Teaching everyone the same skills

With this offense you must be able to master the fundamentals and skills of every position; this is where the Quick Up series comes into play for Coach Bruno. This is where players are taught each position at game speed and are able to teach their guards big man skills and big man skills to guards.

This is so important for an interchangeable offense where you may be the rim runner one play and the wing guy the next. In essence, this Quick Up series is Coach Bruno’s favorite way to teach everyone how to make open court shots, while also getting his team in shape. It also reinforces an understanding of what it means to be a big and a guard in the open court!

Coach Bruno shares an accumulated resource of 40+ years of successful transition basketball experience in this video. The teaching points provided can assist any coach at any level to improve transition scoring opportunities.

This video is great for teams that traditionally struggle with half-court offense. Coach Brono’s transition game allows for spacing to create a more efficient offense.
