with Matt McMahon,
Murray State University Head Coach;
Back-to-Back Ohio Valley Conference regular season & tournament champs (2018 & 2019);
2018 NABC District 19 Coach of the Year
In this video presentation, coach Matt McMahon of Murray State shows his zone offensive package that helped the Racers reach the NCAA Tournament in the 2018-2019 season. The same package also put his players, like Murray State's 2019 All-American and #2 overall NBA Lottery pick, in position to thrive when scoring the ball.
You'll get everything from base zone offensive principles, to continuity, set plays, and baseline out-of-bounds plays that will enhance your zone offense attack.
Elements to Beating a Zone Defense
Coach McMahon begins by outlining his philosophy for attacking zone defenses, as well as coaching "nuggets" and advice for establishing a strong program. He then shares his three elements for beating a zone defense and how important it is to have a clear vision when implementing a zone offense and choosing set plays. Keeping your players' strengths in mind and being consistent to your philosophy will help you when creating your zone offensive attack. You can see how Coach McMahon's zone offenses match his philosophy and maximizes player ability all throughout the presentation.
Continuity Offenses and Set Plays
McMahon shows two continuity offenses and multiple set plays and counters to attack a 2-3 zone defense. His continuity ball screen offense relies on simple principles, allowing players to make plays within some structure. From this offense you will also get sets and counters when the defense gets used to the continuity.
If your team is guard-heavy or you have a play-making point guard, the Slash Offense is perfect! This offense will take advantage of the strength of multiple ball handlers and shooters. Even though it is suitable for four guards, your big man won't be forgotten. The Slash Offense also provides multiple opportunities to pound the ball inside for a dominant post player. As with the other continuity offense, you will get sets that fit perfectly within the offensive flow to take advantage of the zone defense.
Attacking the 1-3-1 and Out-of-Bounds Plays
You must be prepared for a 1-3-1 zone defense! Coach McMahon shows a proven offensive set for taking advantage of an aggressive 1-3-1. This set will get you looks at the basket and open 3-point opportunities! To finish the video, you also get two out-of-bounds under the basket plays that flow into the continuity offenses shown earlier.
This video from Coach McMahon gives you just about everything you will need for implementing a zone offensive package. Turn the tables on your opponents this season by giving them the sleepless nights of having to prepare for your zone offensive attack!
