In this on-court presentation, 2019 NCAA Division III champion head coach Matt Lewis of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh provides drills and motion offense concepts that will help your team score more efficiently. Coach Lewis covers footwork, passing, movement and finishing in a coaching clinic setting and also touches on assigning roles on the floor so players always know the job they have to do.

Stride Stop

Lewis begins with a drill for the stride stop, which will put your players in a position to finish or quickly pass the ball out to the perimeter. Using the traditional jump stop and pivot takes extra time, whereas the stride stop puts you in a position to finish or pass out to the wing in a moment's notice, which doesn't allow the defense an extra second to rotate.

Attacking

Teaching players to move, attack the basket, and read the defense is important in a motion offense. Coach Lewis demonstrates drills that incorporate attacking the basket, cutting to the basket, moving without the basketball, and getting deep dribble penetration. Attacking the basket forces the defense into help position, opening shooting pockets and lanes to the basket for cutters.

Roles/Menus

Next, hear how Coach Lewis designates players as a "crash" or "get back" player, which sets their responsibility to either look for offensive rebounds or prevent a run-out. Assigning these roles will simplify your transition defense and ensure your athletes know their individual responsibilities.

Coach Lewis provides a lot of information on building a motion offense from the ground up. Footwork, understanding cuts and movements, and moving without the basketball are all covered - skills that will benefit any offensive attack!
