Scott Nagy has taken the Horizon League by storm in the last several years. This inside-look into a Wright State practice will show you exactly why he has won Coach of the Year honors for the last three years in a row! You will gain insight into Wright State's offensive style of play in addition to how players are developed on both ends of the floor through breakdown drills.
Offensive Sets & Breakdown Drills
Learn more than 10 high-quality sets to add to your playbook in the first segment of practice. Each of these plays involve a lot of player movement and screening actions that will break down defenses early in the shot clock. You will see two approaches for how Coach Nagy reviews plays with his team that simultaneously warm them up while also mentally engaging them.
Nagy's staff has figured out how to maximize their efficiency in skill development by incorporating a flurry of quick-hitting drills into practice. You will see how they rapidly flow through 10 offensive and defensive breakdowns for a high-paced practice. These drills develop the reads and technique needed to execute offensive actions such as perimeter cuts on ball screens, drive and kick, movement off post feeds, and more. The "4-Minute Shooting" drill will make a wonderful addition to any team's practices with its emphasis on making the extra pass and ability to get every player significant repetitions with limited time.
Wright State develops a strong defensive team with a commitment to developing the fundamentals through competition. You will see seven defensive breakdown drills that will improve closeout technique, on-ball defense, help rotations, and rebounding. The "2-on-2 Interchange" drill challenges defenders to cut off a baseline drive while recovering to prevent their match-ups from scoring. The "3-on-3 Action" drill demonstrates how you can scout specific hard to guard actions from your upcoming opponent.
5-on-5
Scrimmages in practice can be a powerful tool for teaching your players based on how you implement these segments. Coach Nagy shows three scrimmage formats that progressively build up to a true game-like environment. "5-on-5 Full to Full" restricts players to limited trips so that elements of their transition game can be focused on with maximum attention. "10 Possessions" motivates players to value every possession with their half-court offense or defense. Finally, "10 Trips" most closely simulates a game-like environment while still allowing for coaches to provide meaningful instruction.
This practice is the perfect showcase for you to study why Coach Nagy has developed a reputation for producing on court consistency with his teams year after year!
