Coach Tyler Whitcomb teaches the innovative UCLP Missile Offense in this detailed instructional video. You'll learn everything from the basics to multiple progressions your team can use to change things up and score more points. Whitcomb walks through the entire system before heading to the court for player demonstrations.
You can use this offense to teach basic movements and movement without the basketball and Whitcomb's actions shown can be used in any motion offense.
1-4 Action
Coach Whitcomb has many different actions within his 1-3-1 offensive set. A 1-4 action, quick hitter set can get your shooter a shot from top of the key. It's a simple sequence that involves your point guard running off two screens set by the high post 4 that should provide open shots. If a shot is not available, you immediately have high-low action available to your 4 on a smaller guard.
Continuity
The UCLP Missile Offense is a great way to teach offensive basics and movement without the basketball. Coach Whitcomb provides several progressions to build on the continuity aspect of the offense. Your players can learn simple actions with ball movement and screens to cut through the middle, as well as the skills of looking for the basketball and filling open areas. That basic knowledge will allow your players to fill in and succeed in any motion offense system.
Progressions
Good offensive sets involve progressions that build upon each other. Coach Whitcomb teaches basic movements and builds on them with down screens, pick & rolls, high-lows, and cuts to the block from the opposite wing. Defenses will start cheating on the cut-throughs and screens, or just switch automatically. By adjusting the offense, you can take advantage of those guard-on-big mismatches that occur. This helps the offense open up, forcing the defense to adjust to the different actions.
This video provides a terrific assist for coaches teach beginning-level players (and is a useful review for experienced players) the basics of: spacing, ball movement, movement without the basketball, screens and basic offensive principles. As players learn and develop, the UCLP Missile Offense builds and improves with various actions and looks. Defenses will need to adjust to you, which is a win for your offense!
