Energy and effort help establish a culture of playing hard and playing at a fast pace. In order to do that your players have to practice with high energy and get out and go in practice. Coach Rodney Terry creates a practice culture that has translated into outstanding, high-energy game play. Using 2 minute drills, Coach Terry teaches his players to communicate and have great energy every possession. With attention to detail these drills will help build your players' decision-making habits and create confidence for when they need it in the games!

2 Minute Drill Philosophy

By keeping drills to 2 minutes or less, players don't have time to have a negative attitude or worry about the shots they have missed. Players have to focus on the details at a game speed. By teaching players to play the game not the drill, skills can carry over from practice to game. Everything they do will become a habit and everything you do in practice will have a greater purpose.

Opening Practice Drills

Beginning with ‘Charge Drill’ and ‘Finishing Drill’, your players will have to bring the energy and intensity right from the start of practice.  Players focus on creating a wall around the rim and learn how to take a charge all while their teammates are there to pick them. Players are then switching to creating a strong base as they work to get to the rim against a defender that is trying to push them off the driving line. This is a great drill to focus on finishing off of 2 feet and being strong around the rim.

Advantage Basketball Drills

Learning to make quick decisions when your team has the advantage separates the good teams from the great teams. Players learn to evaluate the court and defense at game speed and with efficiency. In 5 on 3 Transition, guards are looking to get as many ‘aheads’ as possible and pushing the ball in transition. As defenders are putting pressure on the next pass, you are looking to attack the rim and score quickly. This can lead to players playing unselfishly and hunting for the best shot.  In Rebound and Go, guards are learning to go get the basketball off of the glass and look to push the ball in transition. They are learning to read - ‘do they have an advantage to attack the basket and paint?’ or ‘do I need to run an action to get my teammates open and create a scoring opportunity?’ This is an excellent drill to learn how to read the open floor and make good decisions in transition.

Shooting Drills

Players have to get up game shots at game speed in practice. Learning how to pass up a good shot for a great shot is an important decision-making skill that is critical at the highest level of basketball. In Good Shot - Great Shot, players are moving the ball quickly around the perimeter all while setting up their shot and looking for an open shooter. Throw in 3 defenders and now players are learning to attack the paint, draw defenders, and hit the one more shot. This is an excellent drill that teaches NBA skills where players are willing to share the ball.

Creating a practice environment that teaches players how to play fast, make good decisions, and bring the energy is a recipe for a championship level program! By setting your players up for success in these 2 minute or less practice drills, players will develop all of these skills and learn to play the game not play the practice drills. These are great drills to build your players to an elite level!
