Warmup
Coach Davis asks, how do you start practice? This question is explained as he believes starting with the right mindset and energy is key for development and a productive day in the gym. He outlines how he likes to structure the early stages of practice to engage players' minds from the jump. Four types of ball handling and passing drills are shown with on court demonstrators. Weak hand ball handling is emphasized in multiple drills as players run through continuous passing drills that work on sweeps, footwork, shot fakes, and dribble moves. Incorporating as many skills and position players as possible is how Coach Davis designs and selects drills to have time-efficient practices.
3-and 2-Ball Drills
Small groups of players are put through snapshots of their offense while working on all the fundamentals at the same time. Post moves, off-ball movement, and ball screens are all emphasized in these drills. The 3-Ball Drill is a continuous drill working off of post entries where every player on the floor gets a shot. Progressing from there, working off ball screens and dribble handoffs in the 2-Ball Drill, guards and posts work on the different reads and passes while the rest of the players on the court get their own shots as well, maximizing time and space.
Ball Screening and Dribble Handoff Concepts
Moving into 5-on-0, Coach Davis delivers multiple concepts and actions to get your players using more random on ball screening and DHO's. The Pinch Ball Screen, Single Screen, and Back Screen/Ball Screen actions are all shown and run against defenders.
In this terrific video, Coach Davis will help you infuse more energy and meaningful fundamentals into your practices and add useful wrinkles and purpose to your motion offense in the seasons ahead!
