He has learned from some of the best to ever coach the game - Bob Knight, Coach K, Denny Crum, and Don Meyer. Coach Starkey has seen what it takes to build a championship program and high character players. In this video, Starkey shares some of the most useful coaching nuggets and pearls of wisdom he has learned over the many stops along his career.

Coaching Style and Communication
There is more than one way to coach and be successful in today’s game. What works for one coach might not work for another. Coach Starkey explains the importance of teaching players to think and talk and the importance of developing critical thinking skills.

Questions like: “What are you doing on a daily basis to think and talk on offense, defense, transition?” What you emphasize means so much more than what you are teaching. Asking yourself ‘what does a good practice sound and look like’ can help you set the bar for your program. This can help you evaluate your program habits. One key element Starkey details is how to make communication a habit. If you want your players to talk constantly, then you must emphasize and reinforce verbal communication and connection on every drill!

Practice Thoughts
Practice is one of the most important elements to your entire program. It's how you develop your players, install and work on your schemes, and set up your program organization. You set your goals and expectations through your daily practice drills. By having your players focus on being the best version that day at practice will set the tone for you building a championship level team! Creating a practice organization will help you stay focused on your values and get your program message across. In practice, players can learn to focus on an NBA - ‘Next Best Action’ - to stay in the moment. All of this will help players trust the process and buy into what you are trying to build with your program.

Culture
How you play the game says so much about your culture. Determining what you want your program to be about and making it happen will separate your program from others. Taking a step back and checking on what your players say about your program can determine what your culture is and where you are headed. Coach Starkey has been around some of the best team cultures in the game including with legendary coach Don Meyer.

How will your players respond when you ask them ‘what does your program stand for?’ Answering this question and creating an environment where you balance doing what is best for the team with doing what is best for each player will determine what kind of culture you are creating. Coach Starkey will help you develop that culture by encouraging you to look inside of yourself and figuring out ‘what do you want out of your players and program?’

‘Learning from the best’ means you understand what it takes to build a strong, championship caliber program. Taking the steps is your next course of action. Coach Starkey has learned from some of the most influential coaches in the game and he will help you better understand what you want out of your program by forcing you to search inside of your philosophy and making important decisions that need to be made. Laying out your foundation will help you create the habits, standards, and expectations you want to hold your program to!
