Played collegiately for Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano at NC StateAs a longtime member of the Phoenix Suns coaching staff under Mike D’Antoni, Phil Weber helped develop and refined an offensive style of play called, The Phoenix Offense -‘7 Seconds or Less,’ - a high-octane, up-tempo system that relies on spacing the floor with shooters and implementing innovations in the pick-and-roll game.
In this video, you will get an in-depth breakdown of options to make this offense even more explosive and tough-to-guard, while providing you with a plethora of options to counter defensive adjustments.
Pick-And Roll Options: Concepts, Execution & Run In TransitionCoach Weber dives right into the action with an on-the-court session that showcases his most-deadly and effective options that you can use off a variety of pick-and-roll situations within the framework of The Phoenix Offense-style of play.
First, he shows a high pick-and-roll option called ‘Houston’ which takes advantage of the spacing that occurs when the opposing big player is lifted from the paint and beyond the 3-point arc. The ball handler uses the pick-and-roll action and has the choice to drive to the basket or hit the screener diving hard to the basket. The spacing of teammates beyond the 3-point line stresses any collapsing defenders and makes this high-screening action even tougher to defend in multiple areas on the perimeter. Coach Weber follows up with demonstrations of other highly effective pick-and-roll actions used in up-tempo, full-court transition situations called ‘Angle Corner,’ ‘Angle,’ ‘Angle Dive’ (which takes advantage of the weak side) and ‘Angle Dive II.’
Counters To Defensive Adjustments
Next, Coach Weber shows off several terrific options to unleash on the defense after they’ve become accustomed to defending the Angle series, beginning with a set called ‘Fist-Up Short’ which is an option that’s especially effective for those teams who have two offensively talented bigs. This is followed up with other options and counters called ‘2-Down Roll,’ ‘2-Down Bump,’ ‘4-Pop Roll.’ ‘4-Pop At,’ ‘Roll Fist 3,’ ‘Roll Fist 3 With a Slip’ and more. Once again, Coach Weber dissects these plays and breaks them down with coaching points and then runs the same plays in transition, at top speed.
The Elbow Series, with plays such as ‘Elbow Strong,’ ‘Elbow Weak’ (a weak-side stagger), ‘Middle,’ ‘Elbow Get,’ ‘Elbow Middle’ and a variety of other sets with each one taught and demonstrated as additional counter measures designed to provide space and give defenses different looks.
This video is fully loaded with creative offensive ideas, game-tested concepts, quick-hitting plays and strategic coaching information that complement The Phoenix Offense attack making this up-tempo, modern offense even more explosive and tough for opponents to defend!
Best of all, the offensive principles explained and demonstrated by Coach Weber in this video can be easily merged into your own fast-break or secondary break systems, as well as your standard half-court offense.
This video is a deep-dive immersion into high-octane style of up-tempo basketball and Coach Weber outlines creative ways for making The Phoenix Offense ‘7-Seconds or Less’ a stress-delivering headache for any type of opposing defense!
